Plinthis of Hipparchos
Inventor of this instrument was most probably the ancient astronomer Hipparchos, even though this invention is wrongly attributed to Claudius Ptolemy. It concerns a simple instrument, which demonstrates a quarter of a graded cycle, while from the centre of the cycle there is a rope hung with a sphere. The instrument is placed vertically to the meridian of the place with the top of its angle pointing to the west. The rope with the sphere drops its shadow over to the graded quadrant and that is the meridian of the place of the observer. It was broadly used by Claudius Ptolemy, and that is why he is considered to be its inventor and constructor.
